Choose a video and save its soundtrack as a WAV file. The video is decoded on your device and never uploaded. Optional 16 kHz mono output keeps speech files small.

16 kHz mono WAV is roughly a sixth the size of 48 kHz stereo and is plenty for speech.
Works with videos your browser can decode, typically MP4 and MOV with AAC audio, and WebM.
Many jobs need only the sound: listening to a talk on the go, sending an interview to a transcriber, editing a podcast from a video recording, archiving a voice recording or running speech analysis. An audio file is far smaller than the video it came from and easier to share.
The page uses the Web Audio API built into your browser to decode the audio track of the file you choose. With the speech option on, the audio is mixed to one channel and resampled to 16,000 samples per second, a common format for speech recognition. The result is written as a 16-bit PCM WAV file and offered for download. No part of the file is sent to Media2Text or anyone else.
One minute of 16 kHz mono WAV is about 1.9 MB, so an hour is roughly 115 MB. One minute of 48 kHz stereo WAV is about 11 MB. If you need a smaller compressed file, convert the WAV to MP3 or M4A with an audio editor.
You do not need to extract audio before transcribing with Media2Text. When you upload a supported video, the uploader extracts the audio in your browser automatically and sends only the audio for transcription, with files up to 6 GB. See MP4 to text and MOV to text. The free trial includes up to 2 lifetime transcription tasks sharing 75 minutes, with no credit card.
Extract audio only from videos you own or have permission to use. This tool does not download videos from websites.
WAV can be created reliably in every modern browser without extra software. It is uncompressed, so files are larger; use the 16 kHz mono option for speech to keep them small.
Browsers decode only the audio codecs they support. MP4 and MOV with AAC audio and WebM with Opus usually work; some professional or older codecs do not. Media2Text's transcription uploader can still accept these files.
This tool handles files up to 500 MB because decoding happens in your device's memory. For transcription, upload files up to 6 GB directly to Media2Text.
